Case Managment Intern

The Case Management position will be highly interactive; the intern will work intensively with refugees from all over the world, the African Community Center staff, government programs, volunteers, and many other individuals. This position is available at our Maryland office.


Duties may include:

  • Locating and setting up housing for new refugees arrivals
  • Pick up new refugees from the airport
  • Take refugees to appointments on the bus or by car
  • Helping refugees apply for Social Security cards at the SSA office
  • Helping refugees cash a check
  • Teaching refugees, how to grocery shop, ride the bus, etc.
  • Writing case notes and maintain case files
  • Dealing with daily issues and various activities as they arise

Position Requirements: Minimum Junior year undergrad in Social Work, International Studies, Foreign Language, or other fields of studies may be accepted.


Duration: 3 months minimum (10-20 hours per week)


Employment Intern

The employment programs help newly arrived community members become employed within 4 months of arrival. They require dedicated staff to help these individuals find meaningful and sustainable work as quickly as possible. Positions are available in both Maryland and Virginia.


Duties may include:

  • Developing and providing job search orientations (teach computer skills, how to search for jobs, etc.)
  • Conducting employment plans (document client’s education and work history)
  • Making referrals to English and employment training classes
  • Assisting community members with learning the skills necessary for self-sufficiency, (learn bus routes, fill out applications, etc.)
  • Searching for jobs, attend job fairs with community members, and establish relationships with employers
  • Helping MG clients apply for jobs and take them to job interviews
  • Assisting MG clients with applying for jobs online
  • Follow up with employed community members and their employers
  • Filing/case notes

Outreach Intern

Intern will assist the outreach and resources coordinator with the planning and fundraising activities for ECDC events.
Duties may include:

  • Special Events coordination and planning.
  • Securing Venues
  • Researching, contacting and securing event participants including vendors, performers, etc.
  • Managing event volunteers
  • Media Outreach
  • Promotion of event
  • Participation in a variety of outreach programs including lecture series, community gatherings, school programs, etc.

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to complete tasks with little or no supervision
  • Proactive, dedicated self-starters are a must.
  • Fundraising experience strongly desired but not a must

Duration: 2-6 months (10-20 hours per week)

Interested interns must send a resume and cover letter to volunteer@ecdcus.org, or attend a volunteer orientation for more information. Once a month, on a varied date, we hold a session at our Silver Spring office (8121 Georgia Avenue, Suite 800, Silver Spring, MD) at 6:30 pm. For the specific date this month, please email the volunteer coordinator volunteer@ecdcus.org. Every third Wednesday of the month, we hold a session at our Arlington office (901 S. Highland St. Arlington, VA) at 6PM. All sessions last for about one hour. If these times are not convenient for you, information sessions can also be arranged by appointment during regular business hours at our Arlington location. Once you have submitted a cover letter and resume, you will be referred to the Case Manager for an interview. If selected for the internship, you will be asked to complete a background check and the volunteer documents.
