Health Outreach Internship


Case Managment Intern

The Case Management position will be highly interactive; the intern will work intensively with refugees from all over the world, the African Community Center staff, government programs, landlords, employers, volunteers, and many other individuals. After intern learns the basic components of Case Management the intern will be responsible for overseeing a case of their own.


Intern opportunities available at our Arlington & Maryland office.


Duties include

  • Locate and set up housing for new refugees arrivals
  • Pick up new refugees from the airport
  • Take refugees to appointments on the bus or by car
  • Help refugees apply for Social Security cards at the SSA office
  • Help refugees cash a check
  • Teach refugees, how to grocery shop, ride the bus, etc.
  • Write case notes and maintain case files
  • Deal with daily issues and various activities as they arise

Position Requirements: Minimum Junior year undergrad in Social Work, International Studies, Foreign Language, or other fields of studies may be accepted.


Application Process:  To intern with ECDC/ACC you must first attend a volunteer orientation which is held twice a month on a Tuesday from 6-7pm (please email volunteer@ecdcus.org for more information). Fill out a volunteer application and pass a background check. In addition you must submit a cover letter and current resume. Once you have attended orientation, you will be referred to the Case Manager who will review your materials and inform you of your status.


Duration: 4 months minimum (10-20 hours per week)


Match Grant Intern

The Match Grant is a specific program in the Refugee program that helps newly arrived community members become employed within 4 months of arrival in Denver. It requires dedicated staff to help these individuals find meaningful and sustainable work as quickly as possible.


Duties include:

  • Develop job club (teach computer skills, how to search for jobs, etc.)
  • Conduct employment plans (document client’s education and work history)
  • Make referrals to English and employment training classes
  • Assist community members with learning the skills necessary for self-sufficiency, (learn bus routes, fill out applications, etc.)
  • Search for jobs, attend job fairs with community members, and establish relationships with employers
  • Help MG clients apply for jobs and take them to job interviews
  • Assist MG clients with applying for jobs online
  • Follow up with employed community members and their employers
  • Filing/case notes

Employment Intern

Intern will assist Employment Specialists with job search for newly arrived refugees.


Duties include:

  • Conduct employment plans (document client’s education and work history)

  • Assist newly arrived refugees with learning the skills necessary for self-sufficiency, (learn bus routes, fill out applications, etc.)
  • Search for jobs, attend job fairs with community members, establish relationships with employers
  • Help apply for jobs and take them to job interviews
  • Follow up with employed refugees and their employers

Position Requirements: Great computer skills, car, and personal computer a plus but not a must


Application Process: Interested interns must attend ECDC/ACC Volunteer Orientation held twice a month every Tuesday from 6-7pm at 8719 Colesville Rd. Silver Spring, MD 20910.   Once you have attended orientation, you will be referred to the Case Manager for an interview. If selected for the internship, you will be asked to complete the volunteer documents.


Duration: 1 month minimum (10-20 hours per week)


Outreach Intern

Intern will assist the outreach and resources coordinator with the following in planning, and fundraising activities.
Duties include:

  • Special Events coordination and planning.
  • Securing Venues
  • Researching, contacting and securing event participants including vendors, performers, etc.
  • Managing event volunteers
  • Media Outreach
  • Promotion of event
  • Participation in a variety of outreach programs including lecture series, community gatherings, school programs, etc.

Position Requirements:

  • Prior special events, volunteer management, experience.
  • Ability to complete tasks with little or no supervision
  • Proactive, dedicated self-starters are a must.
  • Fundraising experience strongly desired but not a must
  • A strong interest in refugee protection and assistance

Duration: 2-6 months (10-20 hours per week)


Donation Coordinator Volunteer

Help collect and distributing in-kind resources for newly arrived refugees. Resources include hygiene products, kitchen ware and utensils, bedding, towels, cleaning products, and warm clothing.
Duties include:
 

  • Organize donation storage room.
  • Make occasional trips to the laundrymat with sheet and blanket donations to ensure refugees have clean bedding and towels upon arrival.
  • Put together Welcome Kits as needed by the Case Managers. Keep a record of items given and items still needed for each kit.
  • Identify in-kind resources that are low in stock.

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to be on your feet for a couple hours at a time.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pound
